Dende Collective members run a series of education activities in schools, art centres and community projects. Some of the themes have varied from: masks, puppetry, storytelling, Brazilian culture, citizenship, radio drama, multi media, etc. Contact us if you would like to know more.

SJH NEWS AT 10 AM PRESENTS: REFUGEE STORIES

A Refugee Week Project and a play with young people

Dende was resident at this Primary School for a week and our artists created a theatre show involving 120 children from Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 presenting the play SJH NEWS AT 10 AM PRESENTS: REFUGEE STORIES. The show explored stories collected during the week by the children with their families and friends celebrating London’s diversity.

KWAIDAN – JAPANESE GHOST STORIES

A play with young people

Dende returned to Contact Theatre in Manchester to work with CYAC (Contact Young Actors’ Company) to devise a Christmas show based on the book Kwaidan Stories and Studies of Strange Things by Lofcardio Hearn. The show mixed martial arts, masks, puppetry, manga acting, traditional Japanese theatre techniques and a homage to Japanese Horror films such as The Ringu to mesmerize and scare the audience.

C-ATTACK!

Street Theatre for the Family

C-ATTACK! told the story of how the city of Great Yarmouth was invaded by sea creatures, who were a metaphor for economic migrants. Issues about xenophobia, racism were explored through a light-hearted and entertaining fable. The final show consisted of outdoor interventions in everyday non-theatrical spaces and a final outdoor promenade/ site-specific spectacular show. We involved around 100 participants from across a vast demographic range within the city, involving local primary school students and members from different community groups.

THE LUNA CLUB

A play with young people

Dende Collective and 20 young people aged 14 – 16 created the inaugural show of the Lyric Young Company (LYC) performed at its Studio Theatre. Drawing on Dende’s experience with the Contact’s CYAC (2006 show CLUB PIRANHA) we revisited the world of the novel Stories of Eva Luna by the Chilean writer Isabel Allende. During five weeks we offered the young people a fully professional theatre experience where, supported by all the departments at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre we devised a show loosely based on the world of Allende’s stories. The show was completely sold out during its run.

THE ADVENTURES OF MACUNAÍMA

A play with young people

Working with a group of 40 young people aged 8 to 14 working on different aspects of the making of the show (actors, set, costume & prop designers and maker and digital animators) we presented THE ADVENTURES OF MACUNAÍMA through their perspectives on the epic, using different media, including digital animation and puppetry.
