Dende is not a static company. We are a fluid, ever-evolving community of international artists, makers, and performers bound together by a shared manifesto.
We believe the journey of creation is just as vital as opening night. The magic happens in the rehearsal room through play, experimentation, and failure. We create environments where artists have the freedom to discover, not just execute.
Words are only half the story. We rely on the body, movement, and intricate mask-work to communicate universal truths that transcend language barriers. Our performances demand an active, physical presence from both the actor and the audience.
Like the sly, skilful magic of dendê in capoeira, our work is a vibrant fusion. We proudly blend our Anglo-Brazilian roots to create theatrical experiences that are textured, colourful, and unapologetically bold.
We actively challenge the insular nature of traditional British theatre. By collaborating with diverse, international voices and staging work outside conventional theatre spaces, we ensure the arts remain accessible to everyone.

Mask Specialist and Artistic Director of Dende Collective
André Pink is the Artistic Director of Dendê Collective. He trained with master clown teacher Philippe Gaulier and regularly teaches clowning at drama schools across the UK. With over 20 years’ experience in theatre and community arts, André’s passion is creating inclusive, playful spaces where everyone can find their creative voice.
Our work is made possible by a brilliant, rotating family of freelance actors, musicians, mask-makers, and choreographers. Instead of maintaining a fixed company, we build bespoke, highly-skilled ensembles tailored to the unique demands of every project and community workshop.
