Our manifesto
Process Not Product.
Say good-bye to short rehearsal periods. Good work needs to be nurtured through time and experimentation.
Back to the Future…
What has gone before informs what lies beyond. We recycle the forgotten, reshape the familiar and rekindle the rejected. Ideas, sets, props, technologies, causes, methods, masks, theories, puppets, ideologies, styles, languages, Art Movements – everything is ruled in, nothing is ruled out.
Brazil is the hybrid product of different cultures fusing together.
Our collective is formed from many nations including the UK and Brazil. Our collective mutates and is reformed depending on the project we are involved with. All voices must be heard. Plural voices are a must. Mixing voices is essential. As the counter-culture guru, Jorge Mautner once said: "Ou o mundo se Brasilifica ou fica nazista", which can be roughly translated as "or the world becomes a bit Brazilian or Nazism is back".
Insularism must be attacked at all costs...
British Theatre is amazing and there is so much on offer and it seems to be alive and kicking even in times of funding cuts, nevertheless, it is also obsessed with what is familiar. There is an insular mentality about end results and processes. There is still a lot of work to be done in getting other voices heard and seen: voices form other lands and pastures.
All Theatre is Physical…
The act of pigeonholing is a window of opportunity and not a chastity belt... Artists often have to brand their own work in order to secure funding or promote what they are doing. So at one point, we might be tagged as Brazilian specialised in Physical Theatre and at another point, we might be Brazilian of mixed origin specialised in Immersive Theatre or perhaps have an interest in Political Street Theatre or Live Art or Masks or Children Theatre, etc, etc, etc... We are not particularly in denial about this aspect of the industry, about the need to pigeonhole our work in order to sell it, but on the other hand, we see this as a survival mechanism and our interests are vast. We also change with time. We want to experiment and investigate with all ranges of theatre we can get involved with.
Passion: all projects matter, all people matter...
We commit the same intensity and focus to all that we do, no matter who with or what kind of project it is. We believe that there is a healthy transference of insights from working on a project with young people or children and then working with professional actors on the same project or vice versa. We learn and grow from all projects we do.
No end-of-line product…
Our work is never completed but remains ongoing, constantly evaluated, re-tuned, explored and developed.
We are strongly committed to bringing pioneering new work for new audiences in the London area where we are based and taking it to the rest of the UK and the world.
